About This Calculator

Capital Gains Tax Calculator is a free, independent tool that estimates your federal capital gains tax liability on the sale of stocks, real estate, cryptocurrency, or other capital assets.

How the calculation works

The tool applies the official 2025 IRS federal tax brackets: long-term rates (0%, 15%, 20%) for assets held over one year, ordinary income brackets (10%–37%) for short-term gains held one year or less, and the additional 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) for higher earners above the IRS-defined MAGI thresholds. It calculates your taxable gain after applying any capital losses you enter, then applies the correct marginal bracket based on your filing status and total income.

What this is not

This calculator produces a federal estimate only — it does not include state income tax, which varies enormously (from 0% to over 13%) and can significantly change your total tax bill. It also does not account for the Alternative Minimum Tax, installment sale rules, qualified opportunity zone deferrals, wash sale rules, or other situational tax provisions. This is not tax advice and should not be used as the basis for a tax filing. Always confirm your numbers with a CPA or tax professional who can review your complete financial picture.
